Republicans have also vowed to repeal Medicare/Medicaid and social security in the past. If the bill does get repealed, they'll only target certain aspects. I know that some people don't like the detail that a unmarried 'child' can be under their parents health plan until age 26, but it's such a high age b/c when people get out of college, they are dropped from the plans. With no job or university, you can't get health insurance. This was to close the gap on the million of uninsured Americans who have not gotten into a career yet. Here's a good summary of how the bill will affect you. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/03/21/us/health-care-reform.html/ So to answer your question, politics. Congressmen are against it for political reasons (since there is no super liberal thing included). Tea partiers and such are against it because of ignorance. (I didn't know what was on the Bill until after it was passed). There was a great statistic that I cannot source (sorry, but a lot of politicians mention it) that about 46% of the US were for and 44% were against the bill (as a whole), but when the poll-takers were described aspects of the bill the ratio went to 70 for and 30% against.

Stop listening to Nancy Pelosi or some far left liberal news channel. Than you will understand why. The biggest reasons why I am against it is because 1. It pays for irresponsible womens' abortions 2. It RAISES the deficit 3. It is going to put the US more in debt 4. The government should not be in control of your health care.

Several reasons: 1) It is going to eventually force everyone to purchase health care and fine those that do not get it. The party's stance is that the government shouldn't be telling people what they have to have something. This isn't like driving a car. You can choose not to own or drive a car and so the comparison to requiring car insurance isn't the same thing. 2) It's going to over tax the resources of our health care system which will bring the quality of the service down ultimately. Those that argue this can look to other countries with socialized medicine. 3) The cost of it. 4) No one is turned away who is in urgent need of health care. If you go to the ER because you have a medical emergency then you will be treated. You can not be turned away so the argument that people are going to die without insurance is BS. No one argues the system is broken here. It's just the Democrats are going way to far to fix it and ultimately this is going to bankrupt the system and ruin the quality of care. People who are supporters can argue with this all they want but if you really look at the full scope of this whole thing the problems are obvious.

quite simple....many in both parties do not see any "reform." consider this: the two most common complaints about health care are that it is too expensive and too bureaucratic. this bill creates several new layers of bureaucracy to stand between you and your health care. as for cost, it does nothing to address them, it simply re-distributes them. example: let's say that the price of milk went up to $20 a gallon tomorrow. there is outrage in the media and the public demands the government do something about it. the government says they will raise everyone's taxes by 4% and give everyone a $15 "milk voucher." the government then congratulates itself on cutting the price of milk by 75%. in this example, were any of the root causes investigated or addressed, or did the government just step in and add another layer to the payment structure that created a false sense of cost reduction? the issue of "access" was a smoke screen to play off "rich vs. poor" rhetoric. would there be an issue over pre-existing conditions and people unable to afford decent insurance if those cost-factors were addressed? if the cost of care could be reigned in through regulation on the insurance system, wouldn't the issue of "access" take care of itself? again, the government was telling you that $20 milk is criminal because so many can't afford milk. but instead of doing anything about the cost, they created regulations for the milk-producers to force them to provide low-cost milk to some people (while continuing to charge others $20). is any of that actual "reform?" that is basically how this bill operates in principle...

They wanted health care reform enough to propose their own bill. They just don't want the monstrosity that was passed. And if a Harvard economist is right, fewer will be insured, at a greater cost. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/11/05/AR2009110504327.html

Call it reading the future. If you go down a road and you see a brick wall do you hit the brakes or step on the gas. A smart person would slow down and avoid getting hurt and a Democrat would want insurance and then speed up to try to go through it. With a brain like that you do need someone telling you what to do. I see our future getting very dark.

Do you have any idea what is in this bill? It will mean higher taxes, almost Immediately. The tax money will go into the budget and we know from experience the Libs will spend it before 2014. Cuts against senior citizens. Panels for OKing your health care not your Dr. the panel will make the final decision. Health care premiums will start going up in a few weeks if not days. The working class is going to pay the premiums for those who don't work, it is not free someone will have to pay. Unions and Congress (and staff) is exempt from the extra taxes. The cut medicare so Dr will get even less when treating the elderly and thus won't take more patients and many Drs are going to leave the US or the medical field. Health care will become rationed within a decade. These are scare tactic these are truths that are being held from the general public. Why don't they tell you the truth about what is in the bill? Because you would get mad. We have already talked and now you will see the results and if we are not bankrupt in 10 years your taxes will be over 50%. You won't have to take my word you will get to live it for the rest of your life.

People who don't understand what a constitutional Republic is obviously are deluded about why Republicans are opposed to leftists like Obama and crew who want to gut the Constitution and move America ever closer to being completely a socialist nation. This "bill" is just that; a gigantic tax bill for our pockets, and a further check against constitutional freedom from government intrusion into our personal lives.

The government will force every individual to purchase health care insurance, or be fined by the IRS. This bill is unconstitutional and a serious blow to freedom of American citizens.

Answer 13
I am an independent conservative, I do not have health care insurance, in fact I was forced into retirement last June when I was laid off. Here is my take on the health care bill and why so many opposed it, including me. There are approximately 44 million uninsured people excluding illegal immigrants. The number of uninsured is about 15% of the entire population of the United States, illegal immigrants make up 5% of the population. This legislation now punishes 85% of the US to provide for the remaining 15% as well as continuing to punish them because of the unpaid health care of the illegal immigrants, sort of a double whammy. This legislation also cuts the Social Security budget by $500 billion yet many of those known as baby boomers (born 1946 to 1964) will begin to sign up for benefits, this includes me, I get my first check on April 21. In 2016 Social Security will begin to pay out more money than it brings in. What do you think this is going to do to your taxes? There will also be cuts in Medicare that will be another $500 billion. Doctors and Hospitals have no legal liability to accept Medicare patients, most of these patients are either handicapped or elderly. When the pay is to low to make it profitable for doctors and hospitals to take these patients they will drop out of the program making these elderly and handicapped less likely to find health care. Many of the key steps in lowering the cost of health care were left out. Tort reform would have saved hundreds of millions, if not billions, of cost to companies that provide health care insurance. Many of the tests that doctors order for their patients are not medically needed, the tests are run as a precaution against a frivolous law suit. A doctor may order a CAT Scan costing several thousand dollars just to avoid or have evidence to fight off a law suit. Now, if you are one of the lucky ones that has a Cadillac health insurance and it is costing you more than $10,800 a year for your policy, you will now pay a fine for having that luxury, you will also pay a fine if you elect not to have health care insurance at all. The sequence of this entire legislation is what is wrong, congress should have taken steps to rid Medicare and Social Security of all of the fraud and waste they claim that there is. Passed laws that would forbid insurance companies from denial of coverage based on pre-existing conditions as well as a regulatory board that would determine the costs of policies. Tort reform should have also be addressed and should have been done a long time ago. Finally congress should have made it easier for the individual states to implement health care insurance within their own borders by creating state subsidies for those states to insure that everyone that wanted health care insurance would have the ability to purchase it.

They do not want Obama to have a win. Now that it is law, they have another problem. Now if they repeal the bill, it will be taking coverage from 32 million americans. Including children. It is always bad for careers to attack children.

Most people that are against the Health Care Reform bill already get adequate health care. Although they might see the problems in our current system, the problems are not immediate enough for them to want to take immediate action. However, for many Americans, medical bills, bankruptcy, and too high premiums make these problems extremely immediate. The truth is that our health care system is ranked 37th globally by the WHO, just below Costa Rica... COSTA RICA is a third world country!!! Although there is much talk about reform increasing costs, it will in fact do much to lower costs in the system, by regulating insurance companies and allowing better access to preventative care. Currently, uninsured and under insured Americans forgo having regular medical checkups due to cost. However, this can eventually lead to massive bills in the end. Consider the cost of going to an annual check up (around $200) versus a potential $100,000 surgery that a person may need if their medical problems are not caught early enough. By allowing Americans to have access to routine preventative care, many expensive surgeries and emergency room visits can be avoided. The original idea behind insurance was for everyone to pay into a pool in case they need medical services. Some people will need more medical care throughout their lives than others, and some may never need anything, but everyone pays in the same amount. However, our current system allows insurance companies to use our medical histories to decide how much we have to pay into the pool. And guess what, those who are sickest are required to pay more. Fun fact: when tests to detect HIV/AIDS became available, insurance companies demanded to be able to use these tests to screen their applicants and AIDS became a pre-existing condition. Is this fair? Is this right? We should be focusing our anger about our current system on these insurance companies and not on our president, who is attempting to fix some of these problems.
